Next to the gardens is our plant nursery. Here you can buy many of the plants you’ll see growing in the garden, together with a range of other interesting plants you may not find elsewhere.
Old primulas & auriculas
We’re known for our notable collections of old-fashioned primulas and auriculas. Each spring we display a beautiful auricula theatre.
Dry garden plants
We’ve sandy, sunny beds in parts of the garden so we’ve been gardening for dry conditions well before global heating started to take its toll.
Plants that thrive in hot, dry conditions include sun loving, vibrant rock roses – or helianthemums. Sempervivums are another specialty that excels in well-drained sunny positions. Ground cover from New Zealand, acaena makes a low-creeping carpet of feathery leaves around dry rocks.
Shady woodland plants
If you have shady spots in your garden, choose from azaleas, hostas, candelabra primroses, meconopsis, and anemone nemorosa .We grow all these in our shady hazel woodlands where they thrive.
Grasses & perennials
We love handsome perennial grasses such as stipa, calamagrostis, miscanthus, and foxtail barley, for texture and movement in beds.
We also grow a large range of hardy perennials, including old-fashioned gems like campanula lactifloria, red valerian, and centaureas. We also have large collections of helianthemums and hardy geraniums.
Fill your cutting garden
We grow loads of annuals because we love seasonal colour and we love to fill jugs with scented posies of garden flowers. Plant a blaze of cosmos, sweetpeas, cornflowers, nicotiana, calendula, and antirrhinums.
New Zealand & Falkland Island plants
We sell plants from the countries where we have previously lived and gardened. There are olearias, pittosporums and flaxes from New Zealand; tea berries and diddle-dee from the Falkland Islands.
Healthy, hardy plants that thrive in Scottish conditions
Many plants in Scottish nurseries are imported from Europe and struggle to deal with local conditions. We grow plants suited to the north of Scotland, varieties we know flourish here, so you can rely on them growing well for you.
